Massage Therapy

At Not Just Fitness, we believe in total healing, total health and personal solutions. That's why, in addition to personal training, fitness classes and nutrition, we offer you a variety of massage modalities with multiple therapist options.

Massage therapy can serve many purposes including: enhanced function of a part of the body, aid in overall healing process from an injury or muscle soreness, to promote relaxation and well-being and many others.

As with fitness, the needs of a client with regard to massage are very personal. Every client should ask:

Below is a sample of the types of massage modalities we support here at Not Just Fitness. As with your workouts though, your massage should be very personal. You do not have to select your massage type at time of booking and you don't even have to know which one you want. Your therapist will work with you and give you a combination of modalities to give you the best massage for you! If you WANT to specify a massage type, we will of course respect that too!

Deep Tissue

What: A massage that includes very slow, deep work. Therapists will warm up the tissue being worked and move over a small area at a gradual pace. Due to the slow & concentrated work on small areas at a time, this massage is recommended to be 60-90 minutes in duration.

Who: This type of massage is good for anyone with chronic tension or injury sites where the muscle tissue is deeply contracted. If you have any nerve dysfunction or neuropathy this is not advised without consulting with your therapist first.

Hot Stone

What: This modality allows for a firm pressure due to the use of hot stones (the stones don't "give" as much as tissues of the hand do). The stones are heated to 120-130 degrees and placed in a pattern on the body with the use of massage oil. This oil acts as a lubricant that will allow the stones to move smoothly over the skin, while still providing the penetrating pressure on the muscles. This style of massage is between a Swedish and a Deep Tissue.

Who: Truly, anyone can benefit from this type of massage. It is used to reeducate the muscles after a tough workout, if you carry tension in your muscles or generally just want to feel better. As with Deep Tissue, if you have any nerve dysfunction and neuropathy this is not advised without consulting with your therapist first.

Shiatsu (with a bit of Thai)

What: Shiatsu includes muscle compression on a mat or table while fully clothed. The use of oils and lotions is not required. The focus of this type of massage is pressure points and improved range of motion. Release of tension, muscle and soft tissue release and elongation is performed throughout the use of this technique.

Who: Anyone that needs to increase mobility or has muscle tightness that could use an "extra stretch" safely. So... basically everyone!

Swedish

What: Truth be told, the lightest and most basic of all massages. A massage meant for general relaxation and increased circulation. Swedish massage includes long, flowing strokes commonly incorporated with an oil or lotion. This massage is a less intense massage than provided by most other modalities and will leave you feeling relaxed, but will not necessarily resolve major muscle or postural issues.

Who: Anyone looking to be more relaxed but without many issues that can be addressed by deeper body work.

Myofascial Work

What: This is used predominately for muscle reeducation to correct postural issue and range of motion issues. This work takes place on more concentrated areas of the body. The work focuses on cross fiber and longitudinal release of the muscle. Depending on the level of postural or range of motion issues being experienced this could require a separate assessment or multiple sessions.

Who: Anyone that has a need for posture change, individuals that have either gained or lost weight (as the body adjusts to manage your new frame) or where proprioception changes may be needed.

Sports Massage

What: A compressive and mobilization technique used primarily to warm up the muscles and joints through movement, while the client is fully clothed. This method allows the client to relax their muscles while the therapist creates mobility of the joint and provides preparation for an upcoming activity.

Who: Anyone preparing for an event such as a tough workout, a triathlon, a swim, a bike ride, etc. This warm up preparation can help limit the potential for injury from said activity. This is a great 30-minute pre-class or personal training activity!

Muscle Release Technique

What: We won't lie, this technique is PAINFUL. The technique uses a method called "Pinning and Stripping". The skin is held (pinned) and the therapist pushes deeply along the length of the muscle to "strip" it. There is no warm up of the tissue or cozy warm massage oils… ya just breath through it.

Who: Better question is WHY? "Why would anyone let someone do this to them?" you may ask. If you are in chronic pain and other modalities haven't helped. If you muscle tissue is atrophied or your joints are just "stuck", this I what may be required to help you. Your therapist will discuss with you in depth if it is felt that this is the appropriate treatment for you.
